North Side vs. South Side – 9th Inning StyleLeave a Comment
Saturday’s ninth inning action epitomized the 2016 season for baseball fans on both sides of Chicago.
CUBS 9th INNING
MISSION – Kyle Hendricks, record wise the weakest starting pitcher in the rotation, attempts to close out his 4-hit shutout gem at Wrigley.
ACTION – A miscommunication between right fielder Heyward and second baseman Zobrist allowed Freddy Galvis’ fly to drop between them for a leadoff double in the ninth. Galvis scored from third when Ryan Howard struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt. A ground-out to third by Cameron Rupp ended the game.
RESULT – Kyle Hendricks throws 76 of 104 pitches for strikes resulting in seven strike outs and no walks to extend the current winning streak to four games. The complete game 4-1 victory takes only 2 hrs, 18 min., making it the quickest game at Wrigley Field this season by a full 20 minutes. The win solidifies the #Cubs (33-14) as MLB’s best team.
SOX 9th INNING
MISSION – Erase Friday’s three-run lead bullpen collapse by securing Saturday’s 7-1 ninth inning lead for a much needed victory.
ACTION – Robin Ventura elects to go with closer David Robertson despite the fact that he hadn’t pitched in five days and had only registered four innings since May 10. Robertson gave up four hits and walked two before giving way to Tommy Kahle -who served up Brett Eibner’s game-winning single off the glove of diving first baseman Jose Abreu with the bases loaded.
RESULT – The White Sox end up blowing the six-run lead and lose 8-7 to a team missing Mike Moustakas, Alex Gordon, and Salvador Perez. Extending their current losing streak to five games. The loss drops the #Sox (27-23) into third place in the AL Central.
