What’s old is new again.

The Cubs ran into a late blooming thirty-one-year-old rookie pitcher in Junior Guerra (3-0) Thursday whose split-finger fastball kept them in check for seven innings, their third loss in four games.

TAKE 5
1. Dexter Fowler lead off the game with a home run, the 15th lead off home run of his career.
2. The Cubs struck out 15 times and managed only six hits.
3. The Cubs’ two-out rally attempt in the eighth fizzled when Michael Blazek struck out Jorge Soler. Anthony Rizzo had walked and gone to third on Ben Zobrist’s double.
4. The Cubs were 1-for 20 with runners in scoring position the last two games.
5. Jake Arrieta (7-0, 1.29 ERA) hopes to stop the bleeding in the San Francisco three game series opener against RHP Jake Peavy (1-4, 7.43).

THE CUBBY CHUBBY TAKE
The Cubs lost another series to another mediocre team and seem to be playing down to their competition. They’ve now lost a series to the Rockies (20-20), the Padres (17-24) and the Brewers(18-23). The red hot Giants (25-19) have won eight straight…GAME ON!

STILL STREAKING
Cubs starting pitchers have pitched through at least the fifth inning in each of their last 47 regular-season games.
Second baseman Ben Zobrist has reached safely in his last 25 starts.
The Cubs have won each of Arrieta’s last 21 regular-season starts.
